Swimming pool pumps have evolved in many ways from their earlier cast iron cousins of yesteryear. Today’s swimming pool pumps have more features, they are much lighter, much quieter and deliver greater performance than ever before. As well as single speed pool pumps there are variable speed pumps that will save you money on running costs but have the extra power for vacuuming and quicker recovery after major pool use. The swimming pool pump plays a vital role in keeping a swimming pool clean, clear, and hygienic.
The primary function of a swimming pool pump is to turn over the entire pool water volume a minimum of once a day, but 1.5 times is even better. Doing this ensures anything suspended in or on the water that has been pulled out of the pool by the skimmer and is too small to be strained out by the skimmer basket and the pump basket, is filtered out by the systems main filter.
A swimming pool pump must run every day, not just for the health of the swimming pool but for the well-being of the pool pump itself. Running the pump every day means it gets hot preventing potentially damaging moisture build up inside the pump motor’s electrical windings. Many times, clients have called saying their pump will not start, but it was running fine last time it was used – three months (or more) before.
The swimming pool pump itself consists an of electric motor driving an impeller situated behind a chamber known as the pump pot which houses a plastic strainer basket. The water from the swimming pool enters the pump through the suction line which is usually attached horizontally by a threaded coupling to the front of the pump. From just behind the pump basket housing rising vertically also usually attached by a threaded coupling is the pressure line.
The ongoing daily filtration and circulation of the swimming pool water is not the only function of the swimming pool pump. Water under pressure is returned by the pool pump to the pool through jets creating a strong stream that ensures chemicals in the water are mixed and distributed evenly throughout the pool to keep algae and bacteria under control. This same action helps eliminate stratification of the pool water giving a more balanced and even temperature throughout the pool.
On the pressure side of the system your pool pump will be laboring unnecessarily if there are any obstructions in the return to pool line. The most common cause is a dirty filter that needs back-washing or cartridge elements that needs cleaning by hose. It can also be if you have salt chlorination, the cell may have a buildup of calcium that will impede water flow and cause excessive pressure. You should also ensure any valves in the return lines that may have had their position changed are returned to their fully opened position.
Other suspects that may be preventing your swimming pool pump from delivering optimum performance are simple swimming pool maintenance issues that should be addressed regularly. The water level in the swimming pool itself should be at least halfway up the skimmer door. If the level is too low air can be sucked into the system with the consequences being those mentioned earlier. The skimmer basket and the pump basket should both be cleared regularly, if they are left to fill up with debris some of it may overflow and become lodged in the impeller, severely restricting performance. This will usually mean the pump has to be disassembled for a proper clearing of the impeller.
To prolong the life of your swimming pool pump, regular maintenance and care pays dividends. Run the pump every day throughout the year, keep the pump pot basket cleared, regularly clean filters, clear the skimmer basket and once every three to four years have the mechanical seal in your pool pump replaced to ensure there are no internal water leaks that can destroy your pump from within.
